This is a little ruffled hat that I knit for Marine Corps Kids. I've made a few similar hats before for my great-nieces, but I modified the pattern slightly for this one. I think it's rather cute.

Many thanks to my friend Sue who gave me 3 skeins of the pink Ruffelina yarn! I'm sure I'll be making several more similar hats to donate!

A large box arrived yesterday from Ruth in Seattle.

Ruth is a great supporter of Marine Corps Kids, and you can see her love and dedication in the beautiful gifts that she shares!

I love these hats. The fleece hats in the back of the first photo are so soft and warm, and the fabrics are colorful and delightful. The knit hats are gorgeous and use some really cute yarns! There are very sweet hats for the girls, and some amazing hats for the boys. Love them.

Finally, Ruth sewed a whole stack of darling receiving blankets. These are two sided blankets, and Ruth mixed and matched fabrics beautifully! Most of these have matching burp cloths for really cute sets!

Yesterday, long time MCK donor Karen was listening to a radio program on Wisconsin Public Radio about knitting. During the program, Karen called into the radio station and talked about Marine Corps Kids! She talked about what we do in terms of charitable crafting and also mentioned our very talented group of male inmates who knit and crochet for Marine Corps Kids.

I searched the web, and was able to find a link to the radio program online. Our crafters might enjoy hearing this story, and about 3/4 of the way through you can hear Karen call in and talk about Marine Corps Kids!

Thank you so much, Karen! It was exciting listening to you on the program. Who knows how many people just learned about Marine Corps Kids and what we do because of you!

Lovely Blankets from NJ

Today I received a box containing two gorgeous crocheted blankets. There was no note in the box and no return address on the package. The box was mailed from Clinton, NJ.
Many thanks to whoever made these gorgeous blankets! The crocheting is just gorgeous! The stitches are so tight, and the fabric is soft and drapes beautifully! I know that the moms who receive these will be thrilled!

A box arrived today from Ruth in Oregon. In it were 12 adorable fleece blankets that Ruth sewed while she had a cast on her arm and hand! The blankets are so cute. They are warm and soft, and the fabrics are just delightful.

I'm not sure how Ruth managed to make these with a cast on her arm, but I do know that the families will love them.

These two delightful quilts were made and sent in by Melody from Orange County, CA.
They are amazing! It's hard to tell that there are actually two quilts here. Melody used fabrics in several different patterns and textures, and included fabric with the Marine Corps logo in the quilts.

Today a box arrived from June in Louisiana. June wrote that she is a Marine Corps wife and mom. She's now also part of our Marine Corps Kids family of crafters!

June is amazingly talented, and as per usual, the photos do not do justice to her work. Everything she sent is just beautiful! The little boy sweater and hat just blew me away. I adore the double breasted front with that gorgeous collar, and the cable work is lovely!

I packed up gift bundles to send out today, and this set is ready to ship to a lucky little guy!

Our Florida Girl Scout Troop just sent in another box of donations for the babies. These girls are so warmhearted and generous. I love that they are using charitable crafting and support of our military as their special project! (The girls have also made and donated Christmas Stockings to Operation Santa).

This time the girls made several blankets, hats, wash cloths and booties for the babies. You can see their skills developing with each package they send! There are making more challenging projects and are doing such a great job! They should be so proud of themselves! I know I'm proud of them!

The Sassy Stitchers group from Oregon sent in another box of beautiful gifts for the babies. Inside were these gorgeous hats, mitts and booties. I wish the photo better illustrated how talented these ladies are. The texture and detail in these pieces are so lovely!

They also sent in 8 colorful and textured burp cloths. I thought that they were too pretty for burp duty, but the ladies attached a note to each cloth explaining that studies show that babies who have colorful and textured burp cloths and higher SAT scores later than babies with plain burp cloths. I love that these ladies are thinking of the babies comfort and happiness now and down the road.

This week I received a box of donations from Central New York. In it were some absolutely darling baby items including, a quilt, fleece blankets, sweaters, hats, booties and some darling snowflake ornaments. The photos show some of their wonderful work (unfortunately, I couldn't get a good photo of the snowflakes, but you'll have to take my word for it that they are beautiful!)

The note that came with the gifts read:

Diane from Ohio is a regular donor to Marine Corps Kids. I absolutely adore the visual balls and pillow toys that she makes for the babies. These are so perfect for tiny hands, and I love the colors combinations! I'm always thrilled to include these toys with our packages to the babies.

This time in addition to the toys, Diane sent 3 adorable knit bibs. They feature Thomas the Train, Winnie the Pooh and a heart. She also sent some keepsake bracelets for the babies. These aren't for the babies to wear, but are cute keepsakes for the parents.

The first photo shows 2 darling baby cocoons. I know that the babies will feel all safe and cozy in these.

The second photo shows 3 beautiful sweaters and some darling booties. We always can use sweaters for the babies, and these are just lovely! The booties are adorable!

The last photo is of a really gorgeous quilt! I've never seen anything quite like it! One size is knit in a basket weave pattern. I'm not an expert, but I believe this is entrelac knitting. Whatever it is, it is quite striking and the workmanship is impeccable. The knitting is than backed with a very soft flannel with an adorable hippo and turtle design. This is going to be a cherished piece!

Sandie from Louisiana contacted me to ask if Marine Corps Kids could use some almost finished items. I, of course, said yes!!

This package arrived in the mail today. In it were a darling jack-o-lantern cocoon and hat, a sweater, a preemie blanket, a hat, and and 7 squares. They are basically finished, they just need to have the ends woven in.

Sandie even sent some pink yarn and instructions on the square patterns so that I could make more squares to attach to these.

My friend Lynn from Iowa is one of the most talented people I know. Check out her handmade jewelry to see the beautiful things she creates! She claims, however, to have to talent when it comes to the fiber arts. Obviously, she is wrong, because she has found a way to contribute to Marine Corps Kids by making these gorgeous no-sew fleece blankets!

I love these blankets. My cat, Tater, approves of them too! They are so soft and warm, and they're easy to wash and maintain. I know that the new moms will be thrilled to receive them.

Today I received a box of gifts from Pam in New Jersey. Just look at the wonderful things that Pam created!!!

The first photo shows some fabulous toys! There is a baby stack toy, a cute fluffy teddy bear, two ducklings, a flower purse and a bunny cloth.

In the second photo you can see a really great checkerboard set that I'm sure some of our older children will enjoy!

The last photo shows two cute hats and a gorgeous blanket. The edging on the blanket is really beautiful! I know that the mom who receives it will be delighted.

Elizabeth from Virginia sent in a box of some adorable items for the babies!

The photos don't do justice to how cute these are! First is a darling little dress that is going to look so sweet on one of our babies! She also made a red hoodie sweater and a cute bib with a cat button closure.

Next she made 3 adorable character bath mitts. These are made from cotton so they are practical for bath time, and they are so adorable! I love that the frog is grabbing at a fly! It's too cute!

Last but not lease, are three animal caps! I LOVE these. There is an owl, a panda and a pig. They are just precious! I would love to see photos of the babies who receive them modeling these hats!

I know that the moms who receive these gifts will be just thrilled!

Nursing Covers

I recently found some nursing cover patterns online and thought that they would be a wonderful gift for our new moms. I had some fabric that was donated to Marine Corps Kids a few months ago, and decided to try to make one.

Let me start out by saying that I do not sew. I'm not good at it, and I don't particularly enjoy it. Furthermore, trying to thread the sewing machine makes me realize how bad my eyes are getting. That was the biggest challenge of the project!

What I love about these nursing shawls is that they have a piece of boning sewed into the top hem so that mom has a "window" to watch baby without sacrificing any privacy.

The pattern that I used suggested overall hooks for the strap. This was a problem for me. It was very hard to attach the button, and in the end I ripped the fabric. I sewed up the rip and found a traditional button that works, and ended up with a useable cover.

If you would like to make these for Marine Corps Kids, I suggest using this pattern. All of the patterns are about the same, but using D-rings for the straps eliminates the trouble that I had.

A box arrived today from Patti in Michigan. In it were 6 beautiful blankets and many lovely hats! I love the blankets - they are all soft and have lovely stitch patterns.

The hats are also great! I like the mixed colors and the fancy brims. The yarns are soft and light-weight so they'll work well in warm weather or cold.

Gorgeous donations from Denise in CA

Today I received a box of donations from Denise in California. I have been crocheting for years, and I have never seen anything like Denise's work. I have no idea what stitches she used or how she got the effects that she did, but her work is just amazing!

The pink blanket on the left has a really beautiful textured stripe pattern. I wish I knew how this stitch was done - the photo does not show how beautiful it is. The blanket is edged in a white lacy border - it's just lovely.

The blue blanket is done in a spiral hexagon motif that is really unique and lovely.

The pink and purple stripe has a slanted stitch design that is really interesting and unique.

There is a basket weave blanket that is soft and drapes beautifully. It is unlike any basket weave stitch that I have ever done.

The last blanket is created of blue and green lacy squares, and is just stunning.

In addition to the blankets, Denise made several hats and two really cute head bands.

Our Girl Scout Troop in Florida is staying busy making more gifts for the babies. Today I received another package from them. It is so wonderful to see their work! The items that they are making are truly beautiful, and these young girls are becoming expert knitters, crocheters, and seamstresses!

The troop leader (and mother of one of the girls) wrote:

"Here are more baby items for Marine Corps Kids. Hope the families like them.

We really enjoy making them. The parents in my troop think this is such a great cause. They all have been talking about the blog I sent to the Girl Scout Council in my town.

Reaching families abroad....

I just received an e-mail from one of the Family Readiness Officers who used to distribute our gifts at Camp Miramar. She is now the FRO for two commands stationed in Germany. She writes:

"Because we are in a foreign country, we do not have the resources at our finger-tips like we have in the US. I am trying to assist new moms and dads. It's scary to be a first time parent, it's another experience to deliver your baby in a foreign country in a non-English speaking hospital. I was hoping you could provide some of the hand-made items for babies such as baby beanies, blankets, booties, etc."

Of course I was delighted to receive her message! We are actively trying to reach as many families around the world as we can, and we will be very happy to send baby gifts to our military families serving in Germany!

I know that all of our charitable donors will be happy to hear that we are expanding our efforts to bases in other countries. The winters are cold in Germany, and the families there will be so appreciative of the beautiful items that our crafters so lovingly make!

Last week I received a very large box from the Sassy Stitchers group in Oregon. These ladies are extremely talented, and do an amazing amount of craft work to support our military.

In this box we received gorgeous blankets, sweaters, hats, booties, mitts and more! The quality of the work is lovely, and the finished pieces are just darling! I can't wait to pack these items up for the families! I know that they will be treasured for years to come!!!

Memorial Day

On Memorial Day we remember and honor all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. We also should stop and thank all those who are serving now, or who served in the past.

Marine Corps Kids is dedicated to supporting our military families by welcoming new babies and supporting the children and wives/partners of those serving. We focus on happy times - the birth of a new baby and holidays to send gifts. Many kids, though, are dealing with loss and sadness.

This article talks about the annual "good grief" camp for those military kids who have lost a parent. It's definitely a worth while read.

"More than 4,300 children of U.S. troops killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are growing up, forging their own paths while keeping the connection to their mom or dad alive in ways ranging from annual backyard barbeques on the anniversary of the parent's death to keeping a music box of his favorite song."

Today, let us remember those who gave their lives for us. But tomorrow, lets not forget the men and women who are currently serving and their families. The gifts that Marine Corps Kids send to the babies and children of our military are just a small way to say thank you and let them know that we appreciate their sacrifice.

Gifts from the Girl Scouts

I was recently contacted by Donna, a girl scout troop leader from Florida. She said,

"Our troop is made up of 4 girls ages 12-15. We are a Cadet and Senior troop.

The last 3 years prior to this one our Service project was to send items to soldiers in Iraq. We would collect and buy items and mail to them, along with cards and Xmas items.

We really wanted to continue with another project which would help the US military. So the girls and I searched the net for making craft items for the military and we came across your site. We did some research. The girls really liked this project making baby items and asking for donations of yarn, fabric. The girls made some great items. we went on your site and other to get patterns to make baby hats, booties, blankets. The girls really like doing this and we have been working on more items to be sent at a later date.

The US military is in our hearts. We have 1 girl in our troop who's father is overseas he is in the Navy."

As you can see in the photos, the girls did a GREAT job! They sent in 9 blankets, many hats, booties, bibs and wash cloths. They sewed, crocheted and knitted to make these gifts. I think they should all be very proud of themselves!

This cutie-pie is Mikka Grace. Mikka's daddy serves in the Marines, and we sent Mikka a welcome gift earlier this month.

Mikka's mom, Ashley, is an accomplished sewer, and makes some of the cutest things - you can see her work as Sew Lovely by Ashley on Facebook. She loves what Marine Corps Kids does, and has been helping us reach more families! She also has become one or our newest donors! She is in the process of making some of the adorable diaper covers (that Mikka is modeling) and mitts for Marine Corps Kids.
